One man’s trash is another man’s treasure – nothing could be truer at Bargain Hendo! “I thought they were hopeless,” said Belinda Sawyer, Manager at Bargain Hendo, WCCA’s Hendersonville thrift store. “A donor dropped off two bicycles. They were covered in dust, the tires were absolutely flat, the chrome freckled with rust. The staff were all shaking their heads, but we had a volunteer that day whose eyes lit up and he said, ‘Oh, those will clean up nice.’”
Over his next three volunteer shifts, the young man painstakingly dismantled, cleaned, polished and reassembled both bicycles. Meanwhile, Sawyer had done a little research and discovered that
Royce Union was a desirable brand for cruising bicycles. “It turned out they were just neglected, not damaged,” she said. “They shined up beautifully, the tires held air. I posted them on Facebook and the next day a couple came and took both, with plans for where they’d ride that afternoon. It wouldn’t have been possible without that particular
volunteer who knew what we were looking at.”
Volunteers are always in demand at Bargain Hendo to sort, clean and display merchandise donations. Recently several volunteers helped to build shelving and make some upgrades to store fixtures. “Bargain Hendo depends on our volunteer staff,” said Sawyer. “We’ve been lucky to have some amazing people working with us.” Proceeds raised from the thrift shop directly benefit the Early Childhood Education, Housing,
Transportation and Older Adults Services programs of WCCA. Volunteering, donating or shopping at Bargain Hendo makes a difference in our community. If you’re interested in volunteering or
