SUMMARY:City of Hendersonville Roadside Mowing Starts April 27
DESCRIPTION:The City of Hendersonville Public Works Department will be conducting roadside mowing on City streets starting April 27 and continuing until late September. Roadside vegetation management is an important part of keeping the transportation network safe and accessible. Regular mowing and trimming improves visibility of traffic signs\, preserves sightlines for motorists\, cyclists\, and pedestrians\, and helps keep sidewalks clear of overhanging limbs\, branches\, and other obstructions. \n\n“Maintaining safe and accessible streets and sidewalks requires regular attention to vegetation along our roadways\,” said Assistant City Manager – Public Services Brent Detwiler. “Our Public Works team uses side-arm mowing to efficiently manage vegetation along more than 68 miles of City streets\, helping keep sightlines open and ensuring roads\, bike lanes\, and sidewalks remain safe and accessible for everyone in our community.” \n\nBecause of the large number of roadway miles the City maintains\, side-arm mowing is the most effective and efficient method for managing roadside vegetation on a citywide basis. Property owners can play an important role by helping keep vegetation on their property trimmed back from the public right-of-way and sidewalks. \n\nFor homes adjacent to roadways\, bushes\, shrubs\, tree limbs\, and other vegetation should be kept out of the roadway and maintained approximately 1-2 feet behind the curb or edge of pavement with a recommended vertical clearance of approximately 16 feet above the road surface. \n\nFor properties with sidewalks\, owners are encouraged to keep sidewalks fully clear and accessible by trimming vegetation so that pedestrians have an unobstructed walking path.  As a general guideline\, sidewalks should remain clear to a minimum height of 8 feet\, and no vegetation\, limbs\, shrubs\, or other objects should extend into the walking path. \n\nKeeping sidewalks clear is especially important to ensure safe passage for individuals using wheelchairs\, walkers\, strollers\, and other mobility devices\, and to help maintain an accessible pedestrian route for all users. \n\nProperty owners near intersections are also asked to trim vegetation and remove debris to preserve clear sightlines for motorists entering and exiting intersections. \n\nResidents’ assistance in maintaining vegetation adjacent to their property helps improve public safety\, reduce the need for side-arm mowing impacts near private landscaping\, and support accessible travel throughout the community. \n\nFor more information about the roadside mowing program\, please visit https://www.hendersonvillenc.gov/public-works or contact the City’s Public Works Department at 828-697-3084.

These popular 90-plus minute walks\nexplore various historic areas of town: along Main Street (Friday\, July 10\, 10 a.m.)\, in\nOakdale Cemetery (Friday\, July 17\, 10 a.m.)\, in the 7 th Avenue Historic Depot District\n(Friday\, July 24\, 10 a.m.)\, and Murals\, Mosaic\, and Ghost Signs throughout the\ndowntown area (Friday\, July 31\, 10 a.m.). Cost for each tour is $10 per person 10 years\nand older. Children under 10 are free with a paid adult. Space is limited and reservations\nare suggested. Visit the website at www.maryjopadgett.com and click on Guided\nWalks to see the entire schedule for 2026.\nHistoric Main Street\nOn Friday\, July 10\, the Historic Main Street walk will start at 10 a.m. at the front\nsteps of City Hall\, corner of Fifth Avenue E. and King St. Tour guide Mary Jo Padgett\nwill describe who donated the land where the new town would be built\, what is the age of\nthe oldest block of buildings\, what was on the third floor (and in the basement) of City\nHall\, who the town was named for\, where the old Opera House was located\, and\nparticipants will learn about Main Street’s bordellos\, shoot-outs\, trolley lines\, and other\nstories of life in the old days on Chinquapin Hill.\nOakdale Cemetery\nOn Friday\, July 17\, the walk through Historic Oakdale Cemetery will begin at 10\na.m. in the cemetery on U.S. 64 W. Oakdale is Hendersonville’s municipal cemetery\,\nand most of the town’s early residents and colorful citizens are buried here. The famous\nItalian marble monument which inspired the title of Thomas Wolfe’s novel Look\nHomeward\, Angel is in Oakdale\, along with both marked and unmarked graves of historic\nfigures. The heritage of the African-American community is told in the Black section of\nthe cemetery\, while the designated Jewish cemetery reveals how the town grew to \nembrace ethnic and religious groups through the years. How and why the cemetery was\nestablished in 1883\, names of those who helped build the town and where they were laid\nto rest\, where the Sunshine Lady is buried\, and more questions will be answered.\n7 th Avenue/Historic Depot District\nOn Friday\, July 24\, the walk around the 7 th Avenue/ Historic Train Depot district\nwill start at 10 a.m. at the front steps of City Hall\, corner of Fifth Avenue E. and King St.\nFrom there participants stroll toward the depot\, where the first steam locomotive arrived\nin Hendersonville on July 4\, 1879\, crammed with tourists and visitors from the low\ncountry of South Carolina. The neighborhood around the depot grew to become the\ncommercial district during the exciting era of big-band music\, dancing\, numerous inns\nand hotels\, much real estate trading\, and huge agricultural growth. Money was made and\nlost\, famous musicians and sports figures came calling\, delicious food was enjoyed at\nevery inn and boarding house … Hendersonville was in its heyday from that moment\nuntil the financial crash of 1929. This neighborhood boasted many businesses run by\nBlack and white owners. We’ll hear the details.\nMurals\, Mosaic\, and Ghost Signs\nOn Friday July 31\, at 10 a.m.\, the walk begins in front of the Historic Courthouse\non Main St. Exploring along the side and back streets of downtown\, including a stroll to\n7 th Avenue and back along Main St.\, we’ll learn the stories behind more than 6 murals\,\nincluding some very new ones\, a mosaic made with 250\,000 small pieces of glass\, and\nnumerous ghost signs barely hiding in plain sight on old buildings.\n“We step back in time through the interesting history and architecture of\nHendersonville\,” Padgett said. “Hendersonville has its own unique culture and spirit\,\nwhich actually began with the lifestyle of the Native Americans\, grew into a farming area\ndue to fertile soil\, and blossomed as a popular destination during the heyday of railroads.\nOur lives here today are influenced by all of that.”\nPadgett served on Hendersonville City Council for eight years\, is a journalist and\npublic relations consultant\, was co-founder and executive director of ECO\, was associate\neditor at The Mother Earth News magazine\, and conducts programs and guided tours in\nParis\, France\, on the American Revolution. Her parents spent their honeymoon in the\nSkyland Hotel on Main Street. DESCRIPTION:SUMMER TRACKS WELCOMES SWEET MEGG TO ROGERS PARK\, JUNE 5\nTRYON\, NC—Summer Tracks—Tryon’s most popular music series—starts its season with  Sweet Megg on June 5 in Rogers Park. On tour with a brand-new album\, Massive Negroni\, Sweet Megg and her band “are a genre bending tour de force\,” says Green Man Review. Performing original songs and putting her own spin on an array of classics\, Megg brings venues alive with the sound of everything from cabaret to jazz to honky-tonk\, from Tom Waits to Edith Piaf\, from the music of the 1920s through present day. Monologging Magazine describes Sweet Megg and her band as “though they were plucked from a smoke-filled Prohibition-era speakeasy rather than formed on the New York City music scene.”  \nAll Summer Tracks shows begin at 7 p.m. More information on each show—including performer’s bios and photos—can be found at www.summertracks.com and https://www.facebook.com/SummerTracksTryonNC. Rogers Park’s covered stage allows for shows rain or shine. Audience members are encouraged to bring rain gear. SUMMARY:City of Hendersonville to Host Free Community Splash Day on August 8
DESCRIPTION:The City of Hendersonville is hosting a free community splash day at Sullivan Park\, located at 712 Martin Circle\, on Saturday\, August 8\, 2026. This free event is designed to help everyone beat the summer heat and enjoy a day of fun in the sun. \n  \nFrom 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.\, a portion of Ashe Street (from Martin Circle to Parkview Drive) will be transformed into a Splash Zone\, featuring spraying fire trucks and water activities provided by the Hendersonville Fire and Water Departments. The event is made possible with support from the City’s Public Works Department\, which assists with event setup\, and the Hendersonville Police Department\, which helps ensure a safe environment for those in attendance. Children and families are encouraged to wear clothes and shoes that can get wet\, bring a towel\, and apply sunscreen for this high-energy\, rain-or-shine event. \n  \nIn addition to the splash zone\, there will be free refreshments for kids – including hot dogs and treats – while supplies last. \n  \nA mini-street festival will include non-profits and local organizations offering activities for kids and information for adults to showcase housing\, health\, and safety resources in the community. \n  \nParking is available across the street from the Boys and Girls Club of Henderson County and is accessible via Oriole Drive. Additional on-street parking will be available on south Ashe Street and in the William H. King Memorial Park parking area off Robinson Terrace. Ashe Street from Martin Circle to Parkview Drive will be closed to vehicles for the event with no parking in the event area after 8:00 a.m. \n  \nEvent Reminders: \n\nWear clothes that can get wet\, bring a towel\, and don’t forget sunscreen\nChildren must be accompanied by a parent or guardian\nLeave pets safely and comfortably at home\nNo alcohol or coolers allowed\nParking is available across from the Boys & Girls Club\, accessible via Oriole Drive\nAdditional on-street parking will be available on South Ashe Street and in the William H.
