LEW HOLLAWAY
Lew Holloway currently works as the Community Development Director for the City of Hendersonville
and oversees the Downtown and Planning Divisions. Trained as a Landscape Architect with a
background in Urban Design, Lew has worked in both the public and private sectors, including with
the North Carolina Main Street Center, a historic preservation based economic development arm of
the NC Dept. of Commerce.
Lew grew up in rural West Virginia before graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a
minor in Art History from Washington & Lee University in 2000 and obtaining a Master of Landscape
Architecture from Virginia Tech in 2005. His interest, expertise and heart are in helping smaller
communities create fiscally, physically and environmentally sustainable marketplaces within the
context of historic downtown commercial districts.
Lew is the happy husband of Jenny Holloway, an environmental engineer, and the lucky father of
Josie (7yrs), Casper (5yrs) and Ruby (2yrs). Fortunately, his family all share his affection for
downtown Hendersonville, the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina and the plethora of
experiences the region offers them as a family.
MAYOR BARBARA VOLK
Barbara has served on the City Council since 1989. She is originally from Chicago and moved to
Hendersonville in 1975. She attended Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana and earned a
bachelor’s degree in mathematics. She also received a degree as a medical record administrator from
the allied health school at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem. She is a professional
registered parliamentarian and before retirement was self-employed providing computer services for
small businesses and nonprofits. She and her late husband, Dr. James Volk, decided to relocate to
Hendersonville after Dr. Volk received a job opportunity. They wanted to live in a town that is small
and family friendly.
Named the 2020 ATHENA Award Winner for Henderson County, Barbara has served on the City
Council since 1989. She is the first female mayor serving the City and has served as Mayor since
December 2009. The international award was established to honor the achievements of exceptional
women leaders.
