Flight of the Butterflies: Movie Screening and Discussion
Thursday, September 27, 6:30 PM (doors open at 6)
Presented by: Blue Ridge Community College, MountainTrue, Conserving Carolina, Hendersonville Bee City USA, and Asheville Bee City USA
Celebrate the local migration of monarchs with this special screening of the documentary film Flight of the Butterflies (http://www.flightofthebutterflies.com/trailers/) (English audio/Spanish subtitles). This awe-inspiring film tells the story of extraordinary insect endurance and human perseverance. Viewers learn about the remarkable annual life cycle and migration of the monarch butterflies as well as the determined Canadian scientist Dr. Fred Urquhart who spent 40 years studying the mystery of where monarch butterflies go when they disappear each fall. Described as a natural history epic and a compelling detective story, this documented scientific adventure spans thousands of miles and several generations. The award-winning production team filmed hundreds of millions of overwintering monarchs in their remote sanctuaries in Mexico and followed their migratory routes from Canada across the U.S. and into Mexico.
Following the screening, Estela Romero, international monarch expert and educator, will discuss the film and answer questions about her home near the monarch’s overwintering sanctuaries in the mountains of Mexico. Estela will share her family’s memories of experiences with monarchs prior to their “discovery” and subsequent revelation to the world in 1976.
In addition, local organizations will provide handouts and more information at their exhibit tables. Bee City USA/Bee Campus USA, MountainTrue, and Conserving Carolina will be represented. Conserving Carolina will give a free native milkweed plant (limit one per household) to the first 50 attendees to stop by.
