Grant writing certificate program to be offered through WCU

April 9, 2019 @ 9:00 am - April 12, 2019 @ 4:00 pm

Western Carolina University’s Office of Professional Growth and Enrichment will be offering a Grant Writing Certificate program from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. April 9-12, 2019 at WCU Biltmore Park in Asheville, and again June 18-21, 2019 at WCU’s campus in Cullowhee.

Dr. Susan Fouts, Director of Educational Outreach at WCU and Jack Smith, nationally-recognized grant writing trainer, will serve as workshop instructors.

“Grant writing techniques and processes are in a transitional stage,” said Smith. “Grant writers need to stay on top of the latest trends that include more online grant applications, requirements for better designed evaluations, and new social policies that determine grant opportunities.”

In this 4-day certificate program, participants will attend two and a half days of grant writing instruction with Smith, who will review the many different categories of grants, and teach time-saving shortcuts in the grant writing process including abstract writing.

This class will help participants increase their chances of winning competitive grants through a better understanding of the entire grant writing process – from planning to writing.

Participants will learn to identify their strengths as grant writers, and acquire the skills required to “think” like a professional in the development and marketing fields.

A panel discussion will take place on the second day with representatives from several local foundations and organizations discussing grant opportunities and the funding process for these projects.

On the fourth day, Fouts will go over the aspects of the proposal budgeting process including indirect costs, allowable versus non-allowable costs, in-kind donations, government versus no-government grants, and time reporting and reporting scenarios.

This program is designed to meet the needs of three different categories of participants including staff and officials who are completely new to grant writing and need a basic understanding of the process; those who are currently working on a grant writing project and are facing specific problems and issues; or successful practitioners in the field who are seeking specialized information and advanced insights into grant project development.

The registration fee for the program is $449, which includes lunch each day.

NASBA CPE and SHRM PDC credits are available.
