Hendersonville Community Band presents “Bold Brass and Band”

To close out the performing year, Hendersonville Community Band will welcome guests Blue Ridge Symphonic Brass, Sunday May 5th at 3p.m. in the Conference Room of Blue Ridge Community College, Campus Drive, Flat Rock, NC.

The ensemble, under Maestro Jamie Hafner,  is dedicated to bringing the symphonic brass repertoire to a wider audience, and to sharing their knowledge and passion with aspiring students. BRSB features some of the finest brass players in Western North Carolina encompassing a wealth of musical experience and backgrounds. They perform the full range of the symphonic brass choir repertoire from Renaissance and Baroque to contemporary.

Under the direction of Winford Franklin, the band will present a selection of works to complement and contrast with the Symphonic Brass including:

“The Pines of the Appian Way” Ottorini Respighi. The last movement of a symphonic poem depicting the Pines of Rome in various locations at different times of the day. Respighi imagines the sun rising from the misty pines to full sunshine as a triumphant army marching along the Appian Way, an ancient military thoroughfare, into Rome.

“Eternal Father, Strong to Save (The Navy Hymn)  Claude T.Smith. An unusual, stirring treatment of a well-known hymn.

“Ayre for Eventide” The second of Three Ayres from Gloucester by Hugh M. Stuart,designed to capture the mood  and life of peasants living on the land of the Earl of Cholmondley.

“Variations on a Korean Folk Song” inspired by the traditional “Arirang”, a ballad of love and heartbreak, that composer John Barnes Chance heard when riding a bus while he was on deployment with the US Army in Korea.

“Tennessee Salute” arr. Jay Dawson Southern favorites like “Your cheating heart”, “Tennessee Waltz”, “Wabash Cannonball”, “Rocky Top”, and “Chattanooga Choo Choo”.

“Hollywood Milestones” arr. John Higgins – can you identify the theme music from modern movie classics like “Jaws” “Raiders of the lost Ark”, “Star Trek”, “Apollo 13” and more.

“Someone to Watch over Me” George and Ira Gershwin, arr. Warren Barker: featuring one of our stellar saxophone players.
