“Pickin’ On the Square” Returns to the Historic Courthouse Courtyard

Mountain music returns for a second time in the Historic Courthouse Courtyard, 1st and Main Streets, downtown Hendersonville.  Each Saturday evening in June (1, 8, 15, 22, and 29), from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., you can join us in the native big circle dances to accompany the music.  This event is free, family friendly and open to the public.

A nostalgic return to the days of fiddles, old timey banjo, mountain songs, solo flat footers and the native big circle dance of the region inviting participants, all on the courthouse steps on summer Saturday evenings in downtown Hendersonville. Impromptu jam sessions of supporting musicians can spill out around the courthouse square. Join in or listen.

A collaborative effort of the French Broad Valley Music Association (FBVMA), the City of Hendersonville and Henderson County Parks and Recreation; award winning musician and dancer Carol Rifkin hosts this elemental recreation of mountain culture that will include several hours of music by local performers, native big circle street dancing with audience participation, regional string bands and even some walk up guests who play in the mountain music genre.

About FBVMA:

The French Broad Valley Music Association is a 501c3 non-profit organization formed to celebrate local musical heritage and hosts a mountain music jam session(focused on regional fiddle tunes and song) weekly 6-8:30 p.m. at Sanctuary Brewing downtownKey Players are intermediate to advanced but beginners are most welcome and encouraged to attend to listen, learn/quietly play along. More experienced players sit in the inner circle and take turns choosing fiddle tunes or songs.  Guests, families and kids are invited to listen and often sing along. This style of community play has been used to entertain and pass down music to kids for generations.
