The roots of Appalachian music and dance run deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina and have been passed down for generations. The Street Dance started in 1918 when the citizens of Hendersonville took to the street to welcome home the soldiers from WWI. People young and old make their way to the Visitor Center at 201 South Main Street in Historic Downtown Hendersonville to experience mountain heritage bluegrass music, square dancing and clogging on July 12, 26, August 9 & 23 from 7 pm – 9 pm.
The 102nd season of the Street Dance comes alive with people square dancing and clogging to regional bands playing traditional bluegrass music. The Street Dance caller gives simple steps and movements, prompting dance figures for people to follow during the square dances. Square dancing is a fun recreational activity for the whole family to enjoy. Square dancing provides an opportunity to encourage an appreciation of folk culture and inspire future generations. Special appearances by area clogging teams make for an entertaining, foot-stomping evening.
Bring a chair. Admission is free. The seating area opens after 5:30 pm; early admission is strictly prohibited. No alcoholic beverages, backpacks, or coolers are allowed.
In case of inclement weather, the dance will be postponed until 8 pm; if the weather does not improve by 8 pm the performance will be canceled.
