SUMMARY:Days of Caring Registration Open to All Volunteers
DESCRIPTION:United Way of Henderson County is excited to present the 2026 Days of Caring on May 8th and 9th. Registration is now open for individuals\, families\, or teams to sign up to volunteer at a local nonprofit. A total of 18 local nonprofit agencies have submitted 23 projects to spruce up their facilities\, creating a need for nearly 300 volunteers. \n\n“It is inspiring to see the impact that volunteers can make when they join together for Days of Caring\,” said Kat Carlton\, Executive Director of United Way. “Nonprofits do so much for our community and this is a great way to come together\, lend a hand\, and say thank you.” \n\nThe projects on Friday\, May 8th include a variety that appeals to all kinds of volunteers. Whether you are a gardener\, a handy-person\, or a creative volunteer\, projects like mulching\, landscaping\, construction\, repairs\, sewing\, and painting are available. \n\nSaturday\, May 9th focuses on the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive – America’s largest single-day food drive. As postal carriers distribute mail\, they also collect donations residents leave bagged at their mailboxes. Volunteers are needed to help drive postal routes to collect the high volume of donations and to help sort and pack food deliveries that arrive at the postal annex. Local donations are shared with local food pantries. \n\nInterested volunteers can find registration instructions by visiting United Way’s website at www.liveunitedhc.org/daysofcaring and choose half- or full-day projects on Friday or Saturday\, or volunteer both days. Volunteers who are registered online by April 4th are guaranteed a free t-shirt. Any questions may be directed to bbartlett@liveunitedhc.org\, or by phone at 828-692-1636 x1103.

SUMMARY:City of Hendersonville Roadside Mowing Starts April 27
DESCRIPTION:The City of Hendersonville Public Works Department will be conducting roadside mowing on City streets starting April 27 and continuing until late September. Roadside vegetation management is an important part of keeping the transportation network safe and accessible. Regular mowing and trimming improves visibility of traffic signs\, preserves sightlines for motorists\, cyclists\, and pedestrians\, and helps keep sidewalks clear of overhanging limbs\, branches\, and other obstructions. \n\n“Maintaining safe and accessible streets and sidewalks requires regular attention to vegetation along our roadways\,” said Assistant City Manager – Public Services Brent Detwiler. “Our Public Works team uses side-arm mowing to efficiently manage vegetation along more than 68 miles of City streets\, helping keep sightlines open and ensuring roads\, bike lanes\, and sidewalks remain safe and accessible for everyone in our community.” \n\nBecause of the large number of roadway miles the City maintains\, side-arm mowing is the most effective and efficient method for managing roadside vegetation on a citywide basis. Property owners can play an important role by helping keep vegetation on their property trimmed back from the public right-of-way and sidewalks. \n\nFor homes adjacent to roadways\, bushes\, shrubs\, tree limbs\, and other vegetation should be kept out of the roadway and maintained approximately 1-2 feet behind the curb or edge of pavement with a recommended vertical clearance of approximately 16 feet above the road surface. \n\nFor properties with sidewalks\, owners are encouraged to keep sidewalks fully clear and accessible by trimming vegetation so that pedestrians have an unobstructed walking path.  As a general guideline\, sidewalks should remain clear to a minimum height of 8 feet\, and no vegetation\, limbs\, shrubs\, or other objects should extend into the walking path. \n\nKeeping sidewalks clear is especially important to ensure safe passage for individuals using wheelchairs\, walkers\, strollers\, and other mobility devices\, and to help maintain an accessible pedestrian route for all users. \n\nProperty owners near intersections are also asked to trim vegetation and remove debris to preserve clear sightlines for motorists entering and exiting intersections. \n\nResidents’ assistance in maintaining vegetation adjacent to their property helps improve public safety\, reduce the need for side-arm mowing impacts near private landscaping\, and support accessible travel throughout the community. \n\nFor more information about the roadside mowing program\, please visit https://www.hendersonvillenc.gov/public-works or contact the City’s Public Works Department at 828-697-3084.

SUMMARY:Hannah Arendt: Facing Tyranny
DESCRIPTION:Hannah Arendt: Facing Tyranny is a feature documentary about the extraordinary life and work of one of the most influential and fearless political thinkers of the twentieth century. Arendt’s philosophical writings emerged directly from her dramatic and often terrifying experiences\, coming of age in Germany as Hitler rose to power\, then finding her way to the United States as a Jewish refugee. Through her bravery\, judgement\, and unflinching capacity to ‘make the facts welcome\, Arendt transformed her time as a political prisoner\, refugee and survivor in Europe\, along with her observations of America during the McCarthy Era\, the Vietnam War and the Watergate crisis\, into thoughtful and daring insights into the human condition\, the refugee crisis\, democracy and totalitarianism\, which continue to resonate more than a half century later.

DESCRIPTION:Experience GODSPELL like\nyou’ve never seen it before. In every generation\, a community gathers around a story\nthat refuses to stay quiet. Staging GODSPELL in 2026 isn’t just an act of theater—it’s an\nact of hope. Now\, more than ever\, the world needs its people to seek justice\,\nforgiveness\, hope\, and love using all available paths. That’s why PilgrimQuests is\npresenting the beloved musical GODSPELL May 20-24 “under the tent at Laurel Green”\nin Hendersonville\, NC.\nGODSPELL\, (conceived and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak with music and\nnew lyrics by Stephen Schwartz) and currently directed by retired priest Philip Wiehe\, will\ntransform Laurel Green Park into an immersive theatrical experience for six\nperformances only.
