Transylvania County Library’s Discover Natural Transylvania series

December 5, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

The Transylvania County Library’s Discover Natural Transylvania series on Thursday, December 5, at 6:30 pm will feature “The Story of the Pisgah Game Preserve” with David Whitmire.

The program will look at the history and role that the Pisgah District of Pisgah National Forest played in the recovery efforts of whitetail deer just after becoming the first National Forest east of the Mississippi in 1916. It was estimated only 500,000 whitetail deer were left in America after years of unregulated market hunting. By today’s standards the whitetail would have been at the very least a species of concern, if not threaten or endangered.

David Whitmire is the founder and co-owner of Headwaters Outfitters on the French Broad River near Rosman.  He is well-known for his efforts to promote and protect the French Broad River.  Whitmire serves on numerous local boards supporting Transylvania’s natural resources. He also regularly contributes to the Outdoor column in The Transylvania Times.

Light refreshments are provided by the Friends of the Library who support the Discover Natural Transylvania program series on the first Thursday of most months. For additional information contact Marcy at 828-884-1820 or marcy.thompson@transylvaniacounty.org
