The Henderson County League of Women Voters is hosIng a program on “Immigration &
Citizenship: Where We Are Now & How We Got Here” on Tuesday, November 18 from 5:00-6:30
pm at the Henderson County Public Library, Kaplan Auditorium, 301 N. Washington St.,
Hendersonville, NC.
Dr. Giovanny Pleites-Hernandez, Assistant Professor of PoliIcal Science at UNC Asheville, will go
beyond current headlines and discuss immigraIon and ciIzenship policy within its historical
context. He’ll consider the quesIon of what it means to be an ‘American,’ and does ‘American-
ness’ differ from other naIonal idenIIes?
Professor Pleites-Hernandez studies minority poliIcs, public opinion, and Congress. He
researches and teaches on a number of topics including, media and poliIcs, public policy and
administraIon, and immigraIon poliIcs and policy in the U.S. One of his recently published
works, with colleague Dr. Rob Shrode, focuses on the impact that personal discriminaIon has on
the poliIcal assimilaIon of LaInx migrants and their U.S.-born children.
