Big Brothers Big Sisters of Henderson, Polk, Rutherford, and Transylvania counties’

most popular fundraiser, Bowl For Kids’ Sake, happens April 18 at Tarheel Lanes in

Hendersonville.

The event offers a fun, easy, and meaningful way to help children get matched with a

mentor. Every year Bowl For Kids’ Sake has a theme to encourage bowlers to dress up

in costumes (or not). This year’s theme is “Boots & Bowling.” Don’t be surprised if a

“Boots on the Ground” line dance breaks out (to learn how to do it, this tutorial explains

the steps).

Bowl For Kids’ Sake participants form teams of four to five bowlers, bringing together

family members, friends, coworkers, classmates, and neighbors, for two hours of

lighthearted competition and community spirit. Each bowler is asked to donate or raise

at least $50. Teams are asked to raise $250 total.

Once fundraising is complete, it’s time to have fun. Bowlers pick the time slot they would

like to bowl – 11 a.m.-1 p.m. or 1-3 p.m. Shoe rental is included.

Registration, fundraising tips, and additional details can be found by visiting the Boots &

Bowling page or www.bbbswnc.org. There will be prizes for best costume.

BBBS recruits, vets and trains caring adults to mentor eager kids who are looking for

someone to encourage and champion them.

“Matches,” as the combined pairs of “Bigs” and “Littles” are called, explore the child’s

interests, often at school or out in the community, depending on the type of match and

the Big’s interests. Bigs give only a few hours a month of their time and often say they

get more out of the experience than their Little.
