The BLUE RIDGE SYMPHONIC BRASS (BRSB) will present the final concert of the current
season on Sunday, April 12 at 3:00 p.m. The concert will be held at the Porter Center for the
Performing Arts on the Brevard College campus, 1 Brevard College Drive. The program of exciting
works for brass, conducted by Cole Hairston, is free and open to the public, with donations accepted
and appreciated. This performance is sponsored by Janice Kimball and will honor local musical
celebrity Virginia Tillotson – accomplished musician, conductor, composer and educator who was
involved in the early days of the Brevard Philharmonic and the Brevard Music Center, as well as
chairing the Fine Arts Department at Brevard College.
Maestro Hairston has designed a program that will offer an appealing variety of music, including a
musical portrayal of A Londoner in New York in three movements titled Echoes of Harlem, The
Chrysler Building and Grand Central; Purcell’s Voluntary on Old 100th; plus a special dedication
to Virginia Tillotson, the Mass by French composer Francis Poulenc. Rounding out the program
is an antiphonal double choir selection by Giovanni Gabrieli, always an audience favorite.
The Blue Ridge Symphonic Brass, featuring instruments found in a symphony orchestra’s brass
section, is dedicated to bringing the symphonic brass repertoire to music patrons in our communities.
The BRSB features outstanding musicians from the Brevard, Hendersonville, Asheville and
Greenville areas. Many perform, or have performed with, professional orchestras and bands or teach
at universities and schools in the region. Maestro Cole Hairston is currently Director of Bands at
Brevard College.
