The Henderson County League of Women Voters is presenting a talk that is open to the public.
CIVICS UNLEARNED: How Politics and Not Caring Enough Have Led to a Disengaged North
Carolina, to be held October 28th 4:30- 6:00 pm, at the Henderson County Public Library. The
presenter is award-winning journalist Sarah Michels.
Sarah’s three articles, recently published by Carolina Public Press, focus on the lack of civic
engagement in North Carolina, particularly with younger North Carolinians (ages 16-29), and
how this hinders the democratic process. How has the loss of civics education as a priority
through college affected this? What are some potential solutions?
Sarah Michels is the elections and legislative reporter for the Carolina Public Press based in
Raleigh. She has dual degrees in journalism and political science from the University of
Kentucky.
