Experience GODSPELL like
you’ve never seen it before. In every generation, a community gathers around a story
that refuses to stay quiet. Staging GODSPELL in 2026 isn’t just an act of theater—it’s an
act of hope. Now, more than ever, the world needs its people to seek justice,
forgiveness, hope, and love using all available paths. That’s why PilgrimQuests is
presenting the beloved musical GODSPELL May 20-24 “under the tent at Laurel Green”
in Hendersonville, NC.
GODSPELL, (conceived and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak with music and
new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz) and currently directed by retired priest Philip Wiehe, will
transform Laurel Green Park into an immersive theatrical experience for six
performances only. The production features Joff Masukawa in the role of Jesus and
Bud Murphy in the roles of John the Baptist and Judas. It explores themes of
“neighboring” and kindness and love, offering audiences an inspiring, high-energy take
on the parables and passion story of Jesus.
“Bringing GODSPELL to life in Laurel Park allows us to break the fourth wall in ways a
traditional theater cannot,” says Philip Wiehe. “This is a raw, immediate production
designed specifically for this space and this moment. It’s a reminder that joy can still
erupt in unexpected places, even in a tent set up on a patch of Carolina ground. And to
be honest, I’ve always believed the gospel lands best when there’s laughter and
sawdust.”
This production’s setting is unique – the physical therapy area in a senior living center.
An inter-generational cast to represent residents, care-givers, and visitors will employ an
exercise bike, a set of stairs, a walker…maybe even a Pilates ball. The key concept is
that half the cast were teenagers when GODSPELL first became a “thing.”
