Bag Lunch Arts Series continues in May with “The Hidden History of Mayberry

May 15, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The 2018 Bag Lunch Arts Series continues in May with “The Hidden History of
Mayberry” presented by Catawba College professor Gary Freeze. The program begins
at 12 noon on Tuesday, May 15th in the Rogow Room at the Transylvania County
Library and is made possible by the Friends of the Library.
Dr. Freeze will discuss his theories on the conceptual premise of “The Andy
Griffith Show,” which debuted in 1960. Borrowing from his North Carolina history class
at Catawba College, he will use key episodes to explain how Andy Griffith himself helps
the state’s residents understand their heritage and history. The noted history professor
will give new depth and clarity to one of the state’s cultural treasures. A graduate of the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Freeze has taught history at Catawba
College for 20 years and has won numerous teaching awards for his depth of
knowledge and engaging presentations. He is also active in state history circles.
The Bag Lunch Arts Series is sponsored by the Friends of the Transylvania
County Library. Proceeds from Friends’ memberships and from Second Story Book
Store sales help pay for all of the programming at the Library. There is never a charge
to attend programs and the public is invited to bring along a bag lunch to enjoy during
this presentation. Refreshments for Bag Lunch are provided by the Friends and include
cookies and coffee from Blue Ridge Bakery. For more information, call the Transylvania
County Library at 884-3151.
