Un-Journaling Workshop: Reviewing Your Journals
HENDERSONVILLE NC, March 20, 2019 – On three Wednesdays, May 1, 18 and 15, from 10 –
11:30 AM, Liz Hill will lead a workshop in “Un-Journaling” – a process that guides people in
reviewing their journals as a way of reflecting on life. The class is offered in conjunction with
Henderson County Parks and Recreation, at their facility 708 South Grove Street.
Registration is $30 for the 3-class session, and participants can register in person at Parks and
Rec, or on the web site www.HCPRD.com.
Hendersonville resident Liz Hill has facilitated workshops for writers at all levels of experience. The
co-author of several books, she developed the Un-journaling process after reviewing more than 40
years of her own collected journals. “Many people write in a journal to record their dreams and disappointments or to keep a record
of their lives,” says Hill. “These journals may be hidden away and forgotten. People of a certain
age may begin to wonder what’s going to happen to their journals after they are gone.”
The Un-journaling Workshop will guide participants in a gentle process of reviewing their
collected journals to reflect on their lives. The process includes time for individual reading
between the three sessions, and for optional shared reflection with others during class. Hill
developed the workshop after she reviewed, and subsequently destroyed, more than 40 years
worth of her own journals. “Destroying our work is not the goal here,” she stresses. “I chose to

do that only after I carefully mining the books for any gems. The real purpose is to take a look at
what you’ve collected with fresh eyes.” The class will guide participants in harvesting journals
for useful content, and will provide tips for creating memoir and using writing in the process of
healing.
“It doesn’t matter whether your journaling is sporadic or as regular as clockwork,” Hill says.
“Taking a deliberate, thoughtful look at your own writings can provide insights into the patterns
of your past and help guide your future.”
