The 24th Voorhees Family Art Show and Sale will be held with a hybrid format of both in-person and online this year on Friday, November 19th (online only) and on Saturday, November 20th and Sunday, November 21st, 10 am to 5 pm. A virtual preview party will be held on Friday evening via Zoom. In addition to the home-style show in North Asheville you will be able to visit all of the artists through a series of live streaming studio tours, artist interviews and demonstrations. The schedule will be posted on our website along with links to each artist’s sales site. An online raffle benefiting a local non-profit will again be featured this year. This year’s annual event will feature new art work created by five Voorhees family members along with two guest artists. Building on the annual tradition of our in-person show and sale but meeting the challenges of the continuing Covid pandemic this year’s event will be held with a hybrid version. An online preview of the show will take place on Friday, November 19th, from 5:30 to 7pm via Zoom. Special features include newest works introduced by the artists and some family stories. There will be a preview party signup on our website soon.
We invite you to join us in person on Saturday and Sunday at the home and studio of Susan Voorhees, 55 Woodward Ave., Asheville, NC. Covid protocols will be observed at this event. Alternatively, folks can shop virtually through a range of formats and platforms using our main portal www.voorheesfamilyart.com A special fundraiser raffle of a collection of the group’s artwork will be held benefiting a local non-profit (tba). Raffle tickets will be available on the website.
Meet this extraordinary family of artists known throughout North Carolina and the Southeast.
The arts legacy began with Edwin Voorhees, (1919-1999) known for his NC coastal watercolor seascapes; and Mildred Voorhees (1924-2007) best known for her colorful, patterned watercolors and rich oil still lifes and landscapes.
Edwin had long wanted to host a family art show as a way of gathering the clan and sharing the varied talents of those working in the arts. So, the first Voorhees Family Art Show was held in the family home in Morehead City in 1998. Edwin passed away the next year but the Voorhees Family Art Show continued, moving to Asheville within a few years. It has been hosted in one of several Voorhees family homes in North Asheville ever since. This year’s show celebrates the 24th show continuing the Voorhees Family legacy begun by Edwin back in 1998.
Three of Edwin and Mildred’s six children and a daughter-in-law will be showing their work at this event: Susan Voorhees, oil and pastel paintings; Jane Voorhees, watercolors, pastels, prints, cards & calendars; David Voorhees, wood-fired stoneware and porcelain pottery; David’s wife, Molly Sharp Voorhees, sterling silver and gold jewelry, some incorporating natural beach stones; and David’s son-in-law, James Becker, resin-glazed art objects. Also exhibiting are guest artists Chad Alice Hagen, handmade books and walnut ink, Cheryl Stippich, stained glass and polymer clay.
